Blindness is an eye condition that is rather a very difficult state to be blind. Your condition may range from partial blindness, where you can see only light rays and colors, to the full loss of your sight. It can be an innate condition, meaning something you are born with and is caused by your genes. But blindness can also be caused by external factors like eye-related diseases that have developed into a worse state.
The most common cause of blindness is the presence of cataracts in the eye. Even in world records, almost half of the cases of blindness are caused by cataracts. This is a condition characterized by clouding in the lens of one or both of your eyes. Cataracts may result from too much exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun and radiation as well as an effect of other diseases like diabetes.
Another common cause of blindness is glaucoma. It is a condition that affects your optic nerve and can permanently damage your sight. Glaucoma can be caused by a multitude of factors related to your gender and genetic make-up. Any other condition that results to a restricted flow of blood to your eyes can also cause glaucoma, which if left untreated can lead to blindness.
Finally, macular degeneration ranks to about third in the main causes of blindness. Often related to aging, this is a condition that is mainly characterized by damages in your eye’s retina. If you have macular degeneration, you begin to have difficulty to see clearly with your eyes. This would lead to total blindness as you age more and the retina becomes more impaired.
